From the Introduction.
As we began to gain access to the archive through our translator Shelley Tanaka, one of the bigger themes that began to emerge was a feeling of things not being quite what they seem. Sometimes this presented in overt moments of transformation and shapeshifting, while at others it was more secretive, more elusive, requiring a level of decoding to unravel. But in every case, whenever there was beauty it was always accompanied by a subtle undertone of unease. I felt this illustration spoke to that fluidity, to the way in which readers would be pulled into the undertow between the visible and the invisible, between the beauty and the rot.
